Flip Flop Key Chain
Sally Ives/June 2005
A slightly larger, 'fun' key chain.  The smaller one at left in pic was made using embroidery floss, and a bit of eyelash yarn around the 'strap'.

Materials:
crochet hook size 3.75 mm
worsted weight yarn in choice of colours: I used a bright variegated (MC) and pink (CC)
small piece of boxboard, plastic or plastic canvas (optional)
pony beads or eyelash yarn for trim
key ring of choice (I used clip that was purchased at a department store)

Notes: Rounds are joined.  Always start with ch1, (does not count as first st) Sc in same st to begin.
Start rounds of hdc with ch2, counts as first st.

To start:
With MC, Ch8.  2sc in 2nd ch from hook.  Sc in 5 chs, 3sc in last ch.  Working along opposite side of starting ch, sc in 5 sts, sc in same st as beg 2sc.  Join.
Rnd 2: 2sc in each of first 2 sts.  Sc in 5 sts, 2sc in each of 3 sts, sc in 5, 2sc in last st.  (22)
Rnd 3: 3hdc in each of first 2 sts.  Hdc in 9 sts, 3hdc in each of next 2 sts, hdc to end.  (30) sts.
Rnd 4: *2hdc in each of 2 sts.  Hdc in 2, 2hdc in each of next 2 sts.  Hdc in 9 sts.  Repeat from * once more.  FO.  (38)

Repeat directions twice more for bottom and centre piece.  For centre piece, work last round by inserting hook back to front instead of front to back.  Continue st as normal.  The top of the st is more centered on edge this way.
If desired to keep piece stiff:
Cut 2 pieces of boxboard slightly smaller than crocheted piece, allow app. 2-3mm around for ‘seam allowance'.
Sandwich pieces together.  Using a running st and worsted yarn, sew pieces together.

With choice of colour, join with sc around post of hdc about halfway up side on top piece.  Ch6, sc around post of any hdc at centre front of foot.  Ch6, sc around post of hdc directly opposite first one worked around.  FO.

Options: a)  With eyelash yarn, work row of sc around strap.  FO.
              b) Thread app. 16 beads on choice of worsted weight.  Join yarn with sc around strap.  Work scs around strap, pushing them closely, and working beads in where desired as you go.
