Worsted weight yarn in two colours: A=rock colour, B=hair
Crochet Hook size F (3.75mm)
two googly eyes (or small buttons)
small bit of stuffing
small scrap of thin cardboard or plastic canvas.
Notes: Always join to top of ch or to sc at end of round unless otherwise specified. Dc 2 sts together=dc dec: leaving last loop of st on hook, work double crochet in 2 sts. Yo, pull through all three loops.
Sc dec: pull up loop in next 2 sts, yo, pull through all 3 loops.
OVAL rock:
With A, ch4, join to form ring.
Rnd 1: ch1, 12 sc in ring.
Rnd 2: ch2, hdc in same. Hdc in next 2 sts, 2 hdc in next st. 3 dc in next st. 2 hdc in 1 st, hdc in 2 sts, sc in 3 sts.
Rnd 3: Ch1 (sc in 2 sts, 2 sc in next) twice. 2 hdc in next st. 3dc in next st, 2 hdc in next st. (2 sc in 1 st, sc in 2) twice. Sc in last 2 sts. (27)
Rnd 4: In blps for this round only: ch1, sc around.
*At this point, using rounds 1-3 as pattern, cut out bit of thin cardboard or plastic canvas, insert in bottom. This will keep the magnet flatter to fit against the fridge better!
Rnd 5: Ch3. Dc in next 2 sts. Hdc in 4, sc in 3, sc next 3 sts together [pull up loop in next st 3 times, yo, pull through all 4 loops]. Sc in 3, hdc in 4, dc in 3. (Dc 2 sts together) twice.
Rnd 6: Ch2, dc in next st, dc dec. (sc dec) 3 times, sc in next st. STUFFfirmly.
Rnd 7: Ch1, sc dec around. Join, FO, leaving about 8" tail. Stitch opening closed.
Round rock:
With rock Colour, ch2. 8 sc in 2nd ch from hook.
Rnd2: Ch1, 2 sc in each st around. Join.
Rnd 3: Ch1, sc in same st. (2 sc in 1 st, sc in next) around.
Rnd 4: Ch1, sc in first 3 sts, 2 sc in next (30)
Rnd 5: Ch1, in back loops only, sc around.
*At this point, using rounds 1-4 as pattern, cut out bit of thin cardboard or plastic canvas, insert in bottom.
Rnd 6: In both loops, (sc in 3 sts, sc dec) around.
Rnd7&8: Ch1 (sc in 1 st, sc dec) around. (11 sts ar end of rnd 8) STUFF firmly.
Rnd 9: Ch1, dec around, sc in last st. FO, leaving about 6" tail. With needle, thread tail in and out of sts of last round. Pull tightly, secure.
Finishing for both: Cut several strands of hair colour yarn in 4" lengths. Starting at centre top of head and working outward on each side, work fringes in as few or as many free loops as you desire.
To make fringe: Hold 3 strands of yarn together, fold in ½. Insert hook back to front, pull strands about 1/2" through, yo with ‘tails', pull through loop and tighten. Trim hair as desired. Glue googly eyes or buttons to front, glue magnetic strip to back. If desired, glue small trims (flowers, small charms, etc) to give your pet character!
