| Starlight was designed by my 8 yo and myself. Delainey picked a profession and the colours, and even the name. The streak in the hair was actually not planned: I had run out of the hair colour! But sometimes, mistakes do turn out for the best, I think it adds to her popstar appearance. Please note: if doll is to be played with, pipe cleaners will work themselves out. Pipe cleaners are recommended only if the doll is basically a shelf-sitter. For toy, omit pipecleaners in arms and legs, stuff legs with fiberfill. Either way, toy is NOT recommended for young children. Materials: 2 pipe cleaners worsted weight yarn in 4 colours. I used: A=skin colour, B=yellow, C=green, D=blue crochet hook size F (3.75mm) small amount polyester fiberfill Notes: Always join at end of rounds. Always work first sc into same st as the beginning ch1. Sc dec=(yo, pull up loop in next st) twice, yo, pull through all 3 loops. Blps=back loops of stitches. To start head and body: With colA, ch2. 8 sc in 2nd ch from hook. Rnd 2: Working in blps, ch1, 2sc in each st around. (16) Rnd 3&4: Ch1, Sc in blps of 4 sts, both loops of 8, blps of last 4. Rnd 5&6: Ch1, sc around. Rnd 7: ch1, dec around. (8), stuff firmly. Rnd 8: ch1, sc around. Rnd 9: Ch1, 2 sc in each st around. (16) Rnd 10: Ch1, sc around. FO. Rnd 11: Join B in blp of st at back. Ch1, working in blps, sc around. Rnd 12-16: Ch1, sc around. FO after round 16. Rnd 17: Join C in st at back. (Sc in 3 sts, 2 sc in next) around. (20) Rnd 18: Ch1, sc around. Rnd 19: Ch1, dec around. STUFF firmly. Rnd 20: Ch1, dec around. FO, leaving 6" tail. Weave in and out of sts of rnd 20, pull tightly and fasten securely. ARMS: With A, leaving about 6" at beginning, ch16. Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Turn. Rows 2-4: Ch1, sc across. Turn. FO after row 4, leaving about 12" tail. Using ˝ of one pipecleaner, fold ends over so that the piece fits the length of arm. Fold arm over pipecleaner, whipstitch long edges together with 12" tail. Weave beginning yarn through ends of rows, pull tightly to close, fasten securely. Tack arm to side of body between rnds 9 and 10. Repeat for other arm. LEGS: With C, ch7, join. Rnd 1: Ch1, sc in each ch. Rnds 2-11: Ch1, sc around. Rnd 12: In blps only, sc around. Rnds 13-16: ch1, sc around. FO at end of 16. Rnd 17: With D, join in st at back. Ch1, (2 sc in 1 st, sc in next) around. Sc in last st. (10) Rnds 18-20: Ch1, sc around. Rnd 21: Ch1, dec around, FO, leaving tail. Bend each end of ˝ pipe cleaner so that it fits length of leg. Wrap small amount of stuffing around one end, insert other end through opening in shoe (D), fitting stuffing in around pipecleaner in shoe only. With D tail, weave in and out of sts of last round, pull and fasten securely. Flared Leg: With top of leg facing, Join C in free loop of st at back of leg on round 11. Rnd 1-4: Ch3, dc in same st. (dc in 1 st, 2 dc in next) around. (39 at end of rnd 4). FO. Attach leg to bottom of body. Repeat for other leg. HAIR: Cut several strands of yarn 12" long. I used D and a bit of B, use your choice of colours! Holding 2 strands yarn together, insert hook bottom to top through free loop on head. Fold yarn in half around hook, pull through about ˝". YO with tails, pull through loop and pull tightly to secure. Repeat for each free loop on head. To make hair a little fuller, and to avoid a bald spot on top, I also repeated this two or three times around sts at very top of head. Trim hair as desired. Finishing: Optional, backstitch straps on shoulders, or leave top as a ‘tube’ top. |
